Job Description: Demolition Labourer / Operative
Our client, a leading construction and demolition contractor operating on significant regeneration projects in the London E16 area, requires a team of dedicated Demolition Labourers and Operatives for an immediate start. This is a hands-on, physically demanding role that is crucial to the safe and efficient preparation and clearance of sites. You will be part of a dynamic team working on projects that are reshaping London's landscape, from the Royal Docks to Canary Wharf periphery.
As a specialist in connecting talent with opportunity, Staffing Agency is your gateway to these vital roles. We don't just fill vacancies; we build careers. Whether you're looking for a temporary position to bridge a gap or a temp-to-perm pathway into a stable construction career, our dedicated consultants work to match your skills and ambitions with the right employer. This role is perfect for someone who takes pride in physical work, understands the importance of strict health and safety protocols, and wants to be part of London's ongoing development.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
As a Demolition Labourer/Operative, your day-to-day tasks will be varied and essential to site progress. You will report to the Site Supervisor and be responsible for:
- Manual Handling and Clearance: Safely loading, unloading, and moving construction materials, debris, and equipment using appropriate manual handling techniques and mechanical aids where provided.
- Site Preparation and Tidiness: Assisting with setting up and breaking down site welfare facilities, erecting safety signage and barriers, and maintaining excellent housekeeping to ensure a clean, safe, and efficient working environment for all personnel.
- Assisting Skilled Operatives: Working alongside and supporting experienced demolition operatives, skilled tradespeople, and machine drivers by preparing areas, sorting materials (e.g., segregating metal, wood, concrete), and ensuring they have the tools and materials needed.
- Tool and Plant Operation: Operating non-powered and light powered tools under supervision, such as pneumatic drills, concrete breakers, and cut-off saws, after receiving the necessary site-specific training and certification.
- Waste Management: Segregating waste materials into designated skips and containers in line with environmental policies and recycling targets, contributing to the site's sustainability goals.
- Rigging and Slinging (with training): Assisting with basic slinging and signalling duties for crane operations, ensuring loads are secure and movements are conducted safely.
- Adherence to Safety Protocols: Strictly following all company and site Health, Safety, and Environmental policies, including wearing full PPE at all times, participating in daily toolbox talks, and proactively identifying and reporting any potential hazards.
Essential Requirements & Qualifications
To be successful in this role and to ensure your safety and that of others on site, you must meet the following criteria:
- Proven Experience: Previous experience as a Construction Labourer, Demolition Operative, or in a similar heavy manual role is essential. Experience on large-scale commercial or residential demolition projects is a significant advantage.
- Valid CSCS Card: A valid Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) Labourer or Operative card is mandatory. We can advise on obtaining one if needed.
- PPE and Safety Mindset: Must own and consistently wear basic PPE (steel-toe cap boots, hi-vis clothing). A demonstrable commitment to safe working practices is non-negotiable.
- Physical Fitness and Stamina: The role is extremely physically demanding, requiring heavy lifting, prolonged standing, and working in all weather conditions. You must be fit for work.
- Right to Work: Must have the full, unrestricted right to work in the UK. We will need to see original documentation as part of our compliant registration process.
- Team Player with Reliability: Excellent timekeeping, reliability, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team and follow instructions precisely.
- Additional Certifications (Desirable): Any of the following are highly beneficial: CPCS/NPORS for plant, PASMA, IPAF, SSSTS/SMSTS, First Aid at Work, or Asbestos Awareness.

The London E16 Worksite & Your Role in Regeneration
The London E16 postcode, encompassing the Royal Docks, Silvertown, and parts of Canning Town, is one of the most active regeneration zones in Europe. You won't just be a labourer; you'll be a key player in transforming former industrial land into new residential communities, commercial spaces, and transport links. The worksite environment is fast-paced, professional, and safety-led. You'll be working with major contractors on projects that have a real, lasting impact on London's future.
This focus on major projects means we also recruit for a wide range of supporting roles. For instance, once a site is cleared, there is often demand for Hospitality Staff (General) to manage site canteens, or for Painter And Decorator teams to finish new builds. Furthermore, the complex logistics of moving materials in and out of a busy area like E16 creates numerous opportunities for skilled Logistics Coordinators. If you're interested in the broader construction ecosystem, our logistics jobs board is a great resource.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
While having your own transport is advantageous due to early starts and the specific site locations around the Royal Docks, many sites in E16 are well-served by public transport (Jubilee Line, DLR, buses). We will provide the exact site address during the registration process so you can plan your journey. Some roles may offer travel allowances or have parking available – this will be confirmed with the specific assignment details.
Yes, absolutely. A valid CSCS card demonstrates your commitment to site safety, which is the primary concern. We have roles that suit various experience levels. For those with general construction labouring experience but less specific demolition knowledge, you would typically start in a supporting labourer role, assisting the core demolition team. This is an excellent way to gain direct experience and potentially upskill. Be honest about your experience level in your application.
Most demolition projects in London operate on a standard construction day, typically Monday to Friday, 7:30/8:00 AM to 5:00/5:30 PM. There is usually a morning break and a lunch break. Overtime, including weekend work, is often available and paid at an enhanced rate. Your specific hours will be confirmed by your consultant before you start. For those seeking different patterns, we also list immediate start jobs in London across various sectors with flexible shifts.
We operate a simple, reliable weekly payroll. You will submit your timesheet (usually digitally) at the end of your working week. Once approved by the site supervisor, our accounts team processes payment. You will be paid every week, typically on a Friday, directly into your UK bank account. All payslips are provided electronically, clearly showing your hours, rate, and any deductions. For more information on our payroll services, you can view our accounting and payroll services page.
One of the biggest advantages of working with a leading agency like ours is access to a continuous pipeline of work. As a reliable and skilled operative, you become a valued member of our workforce. When one assignment in E16 nears completion, your dedicated consultant will proactively discuss the next opportunity with you. This could be on another demolition site, a general construction project, or even in a different sector where your skills transfer, such as general construction jobs. Our goal is to provide you with ongoing employment.
