Key Responsibilities & Daily Duties

As a Maintenance Technician / Operative in Cambridge CB4, your role will be hands-on, varied, and essential to daily operations. You will be expected to take ownership of your tasks, working both independently and as part of a skilled team.

  • Preventive Maintenance: Conduct scheduled servicing, inspections, and testing of industrial machinery, conveyor systems, and M&E (Mechanical & Electrical) equipment to prevent breakdowns.
  • Reactive Repairs: Promptly diagnose and rectify mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic faults to minimise production downtime, responding to issues reported by machine operatives and team leaders.
  • Fabrication & Installation: Assist with the installation of new equipment, which may involve basic welding, metal cutting, pipefitting, and assembly according to engineering drawings.
  • Safety & Compliance: Adhere strictly to all Health & Safety regulations, including LOLER, PUWER, and site-specific protocols. Complete risk assessments and method statements for all tasks. Understanding first aid on site principles is advantageous.
  • Record Keeping: Accurately log all maintenance activities, parts used, and time spent on jobs using the company's computerised maintenance management system (CMMS).
  • General Site Upkeep: Perform general operative duties as required, which may include minor building repairs, grounds maintenance, waste management, and supporting other departments.

Candidate Requirements & Essential Skills

We are looking for a reliable, practical, and safety-conscious individual. While formal qualifications are beneficial, a proven track record and a positive attitude are paramount. This role would suit someone from various backgrounds, including ex-forces, experienced Factory Workers, or skilled tradespeople.

  • Proven experience in a hands-on maintenance, technician, or operative role within an industrial, manufacturing, or facilities environment.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to use hand tools, power tools, and measuring equipment competently.
  • Basic understanding of electrical systems (single/three-phase) and the ability to work safely under supervision. NOT a fully qualified electrician role.
  • A solid commitment to Health & Safety; familiarity with safe systems of work (SSOW) and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to read basic engineering drawings and technical manuals.
  • Full UK driving licence and reliable transport to reach Cambridge CB4 reliably, especially for early shifts.
  • Formal qualification such as NVQ Level 2/3 in Mechanical Engineering, Maintenance, or a related field.
  • Experience with PLCs, pneumatic/hydraulic systems, or welding (MIG/TIG).
  • Certifications such as IPAF, PASMA, or CSCS card. For those in construction-facing roles, we can guide you on the difference between a Green vs Blue CSCS Card.
  • Forklift truck (FLT) licence.
  • Previous experience in a fast-paced environment similar to warehouse or logistics operations.
  • Problem-Solver: A logical and analytical approach to diagnosing faults and finding effective solutions.
  • Proactive & Self-Motivated: Able to work with minimal supervision, manage your own time, and identify tasks that need doing.
  • Team Player: Excellent communication skills to collaborate effectively with colleagues, managers, and sometimes external contractors.
