Are you a culinary artist ready to claim your own kitchen and lead a brigade that crafts genuinely outstanding dining experiences? Team Staffing Agency is seeking an ambitious, award-driven Head Chef to take command of a prestigious rosette-standard kitchen in the heart of York, YO1 — one of England's most celebrated culinary cities.

About the Role

This is far more than a job title — it is an invitation to shape a kitchen's identity. You will inherit a well-equipped, professionally staffed brigade operating under an established rosette-awarded restaurant in York's vibrant city centre, steps away from the iconic York Minster. The incoming Head Chef will receive full creative autonomy to evolve the menus, refine the supplier base, and elevate the guest experience to an even higher standard.

With live-in accommodation provided on-site or nearby, relocation is straightforward, and you can channel your full energy into what you do best — cooking brilliantly and leading a team that takes pride in every plate. Our catering recruitment specialists have personally vetted this role and can answer any questions before you apply.

Key Responsibilities

As Head Chef, your day-to-day responsibilities will include a broad and rewarding mix of culinary creation and operational leadership:

  • Designing and writing seasonal menus that showcase local Yorkshire provenance and maintain the venue's rosette standard with every service.
  • Leading, motivating, and developing a kitchen brigade of up to 12 chefs across all sections from prep to pass.
  • Managing all kitchen operations including GP targets, stock control, ordering, and supplier negotiations to optimise profitability.
  • Maintaining rigorous compliance with all UK Food Safety & Hygiene legislation, ensuring Level 3 standards are upheld across every shift.
  • Collaborating with the General Manager and Front of House team to create seamless, memorable guest dining journeys.
  • Recruiting junior chefs through partners like Team Staffing's hospitality pool and nurturing them into skilled line and sous chefs.
  • Driving menu innovation for seasonal tasting experiences, private dining events, and special-occasion menus that generate supplementary revenue.

What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate will bring proven Head Chef or strong Sous Chef experience in a rosette or Michelin-recognised environment, along with an infectious passion for food, an eye for detail, and genuine leadership gravitas. You will thrive in a fast-paced service environment and remain composed during peak covers.

Essential: Minimum 3 years as Head Chef or Senior Sous Chef in a rosette restaurant

Essential: Level 3 Food Safety & Hygiene qualification or equivalent

Essential: Strong menu costing, GP management, and stock control capability

Desirable: Demonstrated rosette retention or award progression at a previous venue

Desirable: Familiarity with Yorkshire seasonal produce and local supplier relationships

Personal: Inspiring communicator with empathy, discipline, and a culture-first mentality

Why York? A City That Celebrates Great Food

York is not merely a beautiful medieval city — it is one of the UK's most food-centric destinations. From the celebrated York Food & Drink Festival, widely regarded as the north's premier food celebration, to an extraordinary array of independent fine-dining restaurants, artisan markets, and craft producers — the city generates a year-round audience of discerning diners who genuinely care about quality and provenance.

Working in York YO1 means access to outstanding local Yorkshire suppliers — including heritage breed butchers, artisan bakeries, and award-winning dairy farms — all within easy striking distance of the city centre. As Head Chef, you will have the opportunity to forge supplier relationships that become as distinctive as your cooking. The city's thriving hotel, wedding, and events calendar also ensures the kitchen will be both consistently busy and creatively stimulated throughout the year.

Placement Success Story

Case Study: In 2024, Team Staffing Agency placed a Head Chef at a two-rosette property in Harrogate, Yorkshire. Within 18 months, the kitchen had retained its rosettes, achieved a 94% guest satisfaction score, and reduced kitchen turnover to under 10% annually — compared to an industry average exceeding 30%. The chef credited creative freedom and structured supplier access as key factors in the transformation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What salary and benefits does this Head Chef role in York offer?

The role offers a competitive salary of £38,000 to £45,000 per annum, commensurate with your experience, qualifications, and traceable achievements at rosette or Michelin-recognised establishments. In addition, live-in accommodation is provided — an exceptionally valuable benefit representing a saving of between £8,000 and £12,000 annually when compared with renting privately in York. Meals on duty, a staff discount scheme, and a structured development pathway to Executive Chef are also included. All pay rates significantly exceed the current UK National Living Wage of £12.21 per hour. For the complete benefits package, speak to a Team Staffing Agency consultant.

Do I need rosette experience to apply for this Head Chef position?

While rosette-level experience is strongly preferred and will give your application considerable advantage, the most essential factor is demonstrable evidence that you can lead a kitchen brigade to consistent fine-dining standards. Candidates with strong Sous Chef experience in a two-rosette or Michelin Bib Gourmand environment — who are ready to make their first Head Chef appointment — will also be considered. The key criterion is that your food quality and brigade management are of the calibre required to retain and ultimately enhance the rosette status of this venue.

How does Team Staffing Agency support chefs through the hiring process?

Team Staffing Agency assigns every senior candidate a dedicated hospitality specialist who manages the entire journey — from application submission and interview coaching through to salary negotiation, contract review, and onboarding support. As one of the UK's top-25 staffing agencies with over 50,000 pre-screened candidates in our network, we have the industry relationships to move applications quickly and confidentially. We also offer access to our catering staffing services if you require temporary kitchen support whilst your permanent search progresses.

What makes York a good city for a Head Chef to build a long-term career?

York consistently ranks among the UK's most visited and most highly regarded culinary destinations. The city attracts over 8 million visitors annually, ensuring that high-quality restaurants maintain strong covers throughout the year rather than relying on seasonal peaks. The York food and drink scene is furthermore supported by an exceptional network of Yorkshire producers, artisan suppliers, and food festivals — meaning any ambitious Head Chef can build meaningful supplier relationships that directly distinguish their menus. Add to this a comparatively lower cost of living than London or Manchester, and York becomes an outstanding base for a long-term chef career.
