Temporary & Contract Staffing in the UK: Hire Temp Staff, or Find Flexible Work

It’s 4:45pm on a Thursday. A client needs fifteen packers for Monday. A candidate wants to know if they’ll get paid next Friday. That’s the reality of temping. This page explains how it actually works – whether you’re hiring or looking for a job.

What temporary and contract staffing means in the UK

A temp is someone covering a role for a day, a week, or a few months. They're on our payroll. A contract worker is usually on a fixed-term contract, often for a specific project. Then there's bank staff – a pool of pre-vetted people a client can call on per shift, with no guaranteed hours. It’s flexible, but it’s not a retainer.

Payment? Most temps are paid via PAYE through us. Some contractors use an umbrella company, which handles their tax and holiday pay. We explain the difference when you register. The umbrella route is for longer-term assignments where the worker wants to manage their own deductions. For a three-day warehouse shift, it’s usually just straight PAYE.

Key Terms Defined

Temp / Agency Worker

Short-term cover, paid weekly by the agency, with statutory holiday accrual.

Contract / Fixed-Term

A defined assignment length, often with a day rate. Can be temp-to-perm.

Bank Staff

A flexible pool. You book them as needed. They aren't on a set weekly schedule.

Hiring temp and contract staff: payroll, PAYE and on-demand models

1

Payroll Staffing

We employ the worker. You pay an agreed assignment rate to us, and we handle their salary, PAYE, National Insurance, and holiday pay. You get one invoice. This is the standard model for most temporary roles.

2

On-Demand Staffing

Need someone in two hours? On-demand is for last-minute cover. It's faster but often comes with a higher rate. The reliability versus flexibility trade-off is real – we’ll be honest about availability.

3

The Agency Difference

A payroll-only provider just processes timesheets. A recruiter sources, interviews, and places people. We're the latter. We find the right person, not just a warm body to put on your payroll.

All our staff undergo right-to-work checks before they start. Holiday accrual is managed in line with the Agency Worker Regulations. It’s not glamorous, but getting it wrong is expensive.

Peak-season and volume hiring: pickers, packers and warehouse shifts

Black Friday. Christmas. The summer sales. You know you'll need 100 pickers and packers. The question is when to book them. Lead times matter. For a volume order like that, two weeks is comfortable. One week is tight but possible. Two days? You'll pay a premium and we'll be calling everyone in our network.

What's realistic? We can scale up quickly for major distribution centres, especially around key logistics hubs. But if you call every agency in London on the same Friday afternoon, everyone's fighting over the same pool of candidates. Planning beats panicking, every time.

This is our strongest area. We’ve built dedicated pipelines for warehouse and pickers and packers roles across the UK. For a deeper look at sourcing for these roles, our guide on top logistics recruitment agencies explains what to look for in a partner.

Sector desks: HR, hospitality, automotive, drivers and private households

We don't just move generic"temps". Each sector has its own language, compliance needs, and peak times. You speak to someone who knows the difference between a sous chef and a commis.

HR & Admin

Cover for maternity leave, a temp HR position during a project, or receptionists. We place people who can hit the ground running.

Hospitality & Events

From private townhouse staff to festival crews. A restaurant manager's duties? Inventory, rotas, front-of-house management. It's a specific skill set.

Automotive & Driving

Car dealership agencies need sales and valeters. We also cover multidrop drivers, HGV and van drivers. Licences and CPC cards are checked upfront.

Specialist & Other

We have networks for locum cover, supply teaching, and skilled trade work through partners like our carpenter recruitment division.

Looking for something very specific, like a reliable kitchen porter in London? We have sector teams who know those markets. For nationwide event cover, our temporary events jobs service is built for speed.

Choosing a recruitment agency in London and across the UK

You want the best temp staffing agency. Or the highest-rated. But those lists are often paid for. Here’s how to judge for yourself. First, ask if they’re a recruitment business or a payroll outfit. A real recruiter will want to understand the role before quoting a rate.

Ask about their process for right-to-work checks and compliance. Do they do it in-house? What’s their temp-to-perm policy and rebate structure? Get that in writing. Exclusivity can be useful for a big project, but for general cover, it usually just locks you in.

Recruitment industry membership (like the REC) signals a commitment to certain standards. It’s not a guarantee, but it’s a data point. To see how other agencies operate, our guide to top staffing agencies in London breaks down the market neutrally.

Questions to Ask Any Agency

  • "Who does your compliance checks, and when?"
  • "What's your cancellation policy for a shift?"
  • "Can I see a sample timesheet and invoice?"
  • "How do you find companies using agencies? You don't. They find you."

For candidates: registering, applying and getting paid

Where can you get a job immediately? Where can you find a job? The answer is often a decent agency. Registration is free. Always. If an agency charges you, walk away. You'll need your right-to-work documents (passport, visa, share code), proof of address, and National Insurance number. A CV helps, but we can work without one.

A good consultant does more than send your CV out. They'll know which clients are hiring, what the shift patterns are really like, and push to get you interviewed. They get paid when you work, so it's in their interest to place you.

Getting paid weekly is standard. You submit a timesheet, we process it, and you're paid the following week. It's that simple. Want to work part-time only? Be clear about your availability upfront. We have part-time and temporary jobs across sectors.

Virtual assistants: hiring one, or becoming one

Hiring a Virtual Assistant

How a VA can help you: they handle the admin you don't have time for. Diary management, email filtering, travel booking, basic bookkeeping. A virtual executive assistant can be worth it if they free up 10 hours of your week for higher-value work.

How much does a VA cost? In the UK, typical day rates are between £150 and £300, depending on experience and specialism. It's best to check locally, as rates in London can be higher. You're paying for their time and expertise, not office space.

We can connect you with experienced VAs for short or long-term projects. It's a flexible way to scale support without a permanent hire.

Becoming a VA in the UK

Want to become a VA? You don't always need formal experience. Strong organisational skills, reliability, and being good with standard software (Microsoft 365, Google Workspace) are the basics. You can start by offering services to small businesses or through an agency to build a portfolio.

The"VA near me" search is common, but most VA work is remote. Your location matters less than your internet connection and time zone. Specialising in a niche (e.g., social media, CRM management) can command higher rates.

We occasionally have virtual assistant roles for clients needing regular, remote support. It's a growing part of the flexible workforce.

Frequently Asked Questions

They run the shift. That means managing front-of-house staff, handling customer complaints, controlling stock levels, coordinating with the kitchen, and ensuring service standards. It's a mix of leadership, admin, and being on your feet. A temp restaurant manager needs to be able to take control from day one.
