Warehouse Supervisor Job Description

Our client, a major player in the UK logistics and distribution sector with a critical hub in Birmingham B1, requires a proactive and hands-on Warehouse Supervisor to join their operation immediately. This role is central to maintaining the smooth flow of goods in a fast-paced environment, ensuring targets are met safely and efficiently.

As a specialist in logistics recruitment, Staffing Agency understands the specific demands of warehouse leadership. This position is perfect for a supervisor who thrives on responsibility, enjoys mentoring a team, and wants to work with a respected agency that offers more than just a placement—we offer a career pathway. Whether you’re looking for a long-term temp role or a foot in the door for a permanent position, we connect talented individuals with top employers across the West Midlands.

This role sits at the heart of the supply chain. You will be responsible for a team of warehouse operatives, Assembly Operatives, and drivers, coordinating daily activities to fulfil orders accurately and on time. The successful candidate will play a key role in inventory management, health and safety compliance, and driving continuous improvement initiatives on the shift.

Role Details

Your Core Duties as a Warehouse Supervisor

  • Lead and Motivate a Team: Directly supervise a team of warehouse operatives, pickers and packers, and other staff. Conduct daily briefings, allocate tasks, monitor performance, and provide coaching to ensure high productivity and morale.
  • Ensure Operational Efficiency: Oversee the receipt, storage, picking, packing, and dispatch of goods. Utilise Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) to maintain accurate inventory records and ensure all KPIs for order accuracy and on-time dispatch are met or exceeded.
  • Champion Health & Safety: Enforce strict adherence to all site safety policies and procedures. Conduct regular safety inspections, risk assessments, and toolbox talks. Investigate any incidents or near-misses and ensure a culture of safety-first is maintained at all times.
  • Manage Resources & Workflow: Plan shift workloads effectively, managing manpower, equipment (MHE), and space to meet fluctuating demand. Liaise with other departments such as transport and customer service to resolve issues and ensure seamless operations.
  • Quality Control & Problem Solving: Maintain high standards of housekeeping (5S). Investigate and resolve discrepancies in stock or orders. Implement process improvements to reduce waste, improve accuracy, and enhance overall warehouse performance.
  • Administration & Reporting: Complete necessary paperwork and system updates. Generate shift reports on productivity, attendance, and any issues for the Warehouse Manager.

What You Need to Succeed

  • Proven Experience: Minimum of 2 years in a warehouse supervisory or team leader role within a fast-moving logistics, distribution, or manufacturing environment. Experience managing teams of 10+ is highly desirable.
  • Technical Knowledge: Strong working knowledge of warehouse processes, inventory control, and modern WMS. A valid counterbalance forklift licence (or reach truck) is a significant advantage, though not always essential.
  • Leadership & Communication: Excellent people management skills with the ability to motivate, discipline, and develop a diverse team. Clear and confident communicator at all levels.
  • Health & Safety Focus: A thorough understanding of UK warehouse health and safety regulations. IOSH or similar certification is a strong plus.
  • Problem-Solving Aptitude: A logical and proactive approach to solving operational challenges. Ability to work under pressure and make sound decisions to keep the shift running smoothly.
  • Flexibility: Willingness to work shifts, which may include earlies, lates, and occasional weekends, to meet the needs of the business.

If you have transferable leadership skills from another sector, such as from a role as a Temporary Chef managing a kitchen brigade, or a Travel Nurse coordinating patient care, we encourage you to apply. Your organisational and people skills are highly valuable.
