Key Phlebotomist Responsibilities & Duties

In this role, you will be expected to perform a range of essential duties with the highest standards of patient care and clinical safety. Your core responsibilities will include:

• Performing Venepuncture and Capillary Blood Sampling: Safely and efficiently collecting blood samples from patients of all ages using correct techniques and equipment, minimising discomfort and anxiety.
• Patient Identification and Labelling: Meticulously verifying patient identity against request forms and ensuring all samples are accurately labelled, following strict GDPR and clinical governance protocols to prevent errors.
• Maintaining Infection Control & Health & Safety Standards: Adhering to rigorous infection prevention control (IPC) measures, including proper use of PPE, safe disposal of sharps, and maintaining a clean, tidy clinical environment.
• Equipment Management and Stock Control: Checking, preparing, and restocking phlebotomy trays and stations, ensuring all equipment is in date and reporting any faults or shortages to the senior nurse or clinic manager.
• Providing Reassurance and Patient Care: Communicating clearly and compassionately with patients, explaining procedures, managing needle phobia, and providing aftercare advice while monitoring for adverse reactions like vasovagal episodes.
• Data Entry and Administrative Support: Accurately entering patient and sample data into relevant clinical systems, managing appointment schedules, and assisting with general clinic administration as required.
• Working as Part of a Multidisciplinary Team: Collaborating effectively with nurses, doctors, healthcare assistants, and administrative staff to ensure smooth clinic flow and high-quality service delivery.

Essential Skills, Qualifications & Requirements

To be successful in this Phlebotomist role in Bristol, you will need to demonstrate the following. We welcome applications from those with relevant transferable skills, such as those gained as a Healthcare Assistant or Medical Receptionist.

• Proven Phlebotomy Experience & Certification: A recognised Phlebotomy certificate (e.g., NCFE, OCN) or demonstrable competency from previous employment. Experience in a fast-paced clinical setting is highly desirable.
• Excellent Venepuncture Technique: Confidence in performing blood draws on a diverse patient population, including children, elderly patients, and those with difficult veins.
• Strong Interpersonal & Communication Skills: A calm, empathetic, and professional manner with the ability to reassure anxious patients and communicate effectively with clinical colleagues.
• Attention to Detail & Compliance Focus: A meticulous approach to following procedures, labelling samples, and maintaining accurate records. Understanding of patient confidentiality (GDPR) and CQC standards.
• Reliability & Flexibility: Punctuality, professionalism, and willingness to work flexible shifts, including early starts, late finishes, and potential weekend work across various Bristol BS1 locations.
• Right to Work in the UK & Compliance: Must have the right to work in the UK. A satisfactory enhanced DBS check (which we can process) and evidence of immunisation status (Hep B, etc.) will be required.
